Your Help Is Needed! Volunteer just a few hours at the Kewaunee Lighthouse this summer!

Jake Heffernan

Are you over age 16 and looking for a unique way to support a community icon? Can you spare 3 hours on a Saturday this summer?

Become a volunteer tour guide for the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse!

It may still be frigid outside - the sea smoke is still thick far above Lake Michigan - but we're looking to summer. Maybe "looking" is the wrong word. Longing?

Either way...the Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse are in need of volunteers for our tours this summer. Our initial schedule is set, however we would love to add more opportunities for people to experience our lighthouse - and on a grander scale, our city as a whole.

We have 5 public tour dates set, and are looking for volunteers for those. Before the first tour date, you'll be taken out to the lighthouse for an introduction to the building and the tour. On the tour day, you'd be paired up with a more experienced volunteer who would walk you through the actual tour portion.

Whether you want to greet visitors or explain the history or restoration efforts, or simply just want to direct people up and down the tower ladder, we would love to find a place for you to fit in!

On public tour days, the lighthouse is open from 10am - 4pm but you can sign up to work either 10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4 pm. All we ask is that small, 3 hour commitment.

We also have a date at the beginning of June where we will be hosting two groups from the UWGB Lifelong Learning Institute. We are in need of another volunteer for each tour group. That volunteer would primarily be supporting the main tour guide by collecting the admission fee from guests and ensuring nobody is left behind on the walking portion of the tour. This person will also help control the flow of these visitors through the lighthouse. As with public tours, shifts are small. In this case, each tour is less than 2 hours long.

Finally, we are looking to create some additional tour opportunities for the public, namely through a Guided Harbor Walking tour, which begins on the historic WWII era tug Ludington and ends in the lighthouse. The tour guide book has been created and will be provided to interested volunteers, as will more in-depth training.

Volunteers are needed for us to implement this tour plan and begin scheduling dates.

Two volunteers will be needed for the shore portion of the tour - beginning aboard the Tug and ending at the base of the south pier with several stops to explain various aspects of the harbor history. The shore volunteers will then send the tour out to the lighthouse unescorted and return to the tug for the next tour group.

2-3 additional volunteers will be waiting for the group at the lighthouse to welcome them and guide them through that portion of the tour.

If guiding tours isn't your thing, we've got plenty of behind the scenes tasks to help support the operation of the non-profit. We need volunteers to work with merchandise, post on social media, write articles for the newsletter, and complete other clerical tasks.

We'll also need volunteers to help us clean the lighthouse at the beginning of the season. (Sweeping, washing windows, and clearing cobwebs)

If ANY of these opportunities sound like you - or a friend or family member - might enjoy, please reach out to Jake Heffernan at keeper@kewauneepierheadlighthouse.org to join in the fun! You can also click the button below and fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

HIGH SCHOOLERS 16+ in search of service learning or looking for an interesting volunteer activity are encouraged to join us as well!
